Matthew Gunkel

Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer University of California, Riverside

Matthew Gunkel is the Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer for the University of California, Riverside. Overseeing a period of significant change and growth at UCR, Matthew is charged with enabling support of strategic priorities, collaborative partnerships, and strengthening Information Technology Solutions through improvements in critical IT services (e.g., security, networking, teaching and learning, enterprise applications, support services, etc.). A significant aspect of UCR’s transformation journey involved the strategic focus on supporting research at cloud scale. Under Matthew’s leadership, UCR collaborated with Google Public Sector to modernize the university’s enterprise infrastructure and support its research programs.

Previously, Matthew served as Chief Online Learning and Technology Officer at the University of Missouri, where he led the digital vision, educational technology, learning analytics, and online roadmap for Missouri Online, a system-wide endeavor that enrolled over 9,000 annually. Under his leadership, the university combined over 350 academic programs into a cohesive online presence, complete with an enhanced technology platform for Missouri Online.

Among his many other accomplishments, Matt developed a system-wide plan for digital learning, improved classroom infrastructure, saved the university $1.2 million by negotiating technology contracts and partnerships, and raised its U.S. News and World Report’s rankings by improving data alignment, reporting, and key areas of service, such as course quality metrics. Matt also served for 13 years in a variety of capacities within IT at Indiana University. As Director of Teaching and Learning Technology, he oversaw critical IT operations related to cloud, accessibility, machine learning, Canvas, and analytics.

Matthew earned a Master’s degree in Information Science from Indiana University and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Technology from Purdue University.
